Are your recruiters finding it challenging to balance filling open job orders and giving candidates the personal attention they deserve? Could your hiring process be better?
If so, it’s time to take action.
In our latest blog series called “Mastering the Five Key Engagement Touchpoints,” we are discussing how the right technology can overcome the most pressing challenges of the hiring process to help you gain efficiencies and improve the overall candidate experience. Many staffing firms that we work with know their recruiters have the best intentions of creating a world-class experience for their candidates, but to do that, sometimes they need a little help—especially if they are a high-volume employer.
#1 Key touchpoint: Get the initial application process right.
There is no denying the inherent advantages to adding engagement throughout your hiring process. But, as is the case with any business decision, a transformational move like this needs to make sense to your stakeholders.
The first area in which to consider improving engagement is the initial application. As any employer knows, finding great talent is difficult. A candidate may be the right fit, but they may already be happy at their current assignment or they may simply just not want to be found. In any case, making the initial application process easy is key to starting the relationship off on the right foot.
How many times have you been interested in a position and when you tried to apply, it was either confusing, not visually appealing or just too long? It happens more times than you think. In fact, a recent Talent Board study of 75,000 candidates found that job applicants want more simplicity and transparency during the application process, and 51% of job candidates rated their overall application experience in the 1-3 range on a scale of 5. When the application process is complicated or not user-friendly, drop off rates can skyrocket to up to 75%!
So, what do we think staffing firms should do to ensure their best candidates apply? We have three recommendations starting with how your jobs are displayed.
Ensure easy mobile access
It’s no secret many candidates these days are using their mobile device more than ever in their daily lives. That includes using them when searching for jobs. It’s crucial that everything from your job board to the application process is built with mobile in mind. A mobile-first mentality provides a better experience for your candidates and also results in new talent entering your pipeline.
Measure progression through stages
Let’s face it, today’s candidates need transparency when filling out a job application. In the analog world, they can see how much paperwork they need to complete, but in the digital world, it’s a bit more difficult. Using concepts like gamification will help keep candidates engaged and gives them insight into the application process to avoid drop off and create a better first impression.
Constant engagement to prevent drop-off
As much as measuring progression through gamification is helpful, you also must ensure engagement doesn’t drop off once the application has been filled out. Using technology can help recruiters stay in touch with candidates providing updates and feedback throughout the process. Messages can be personalized and automated to make sure candidates are always aware of their standing.
All of these suggestions may seem common sense, but implementing them into your current workflows can undoubtedly be a challenge. Fortunately, we have been solving challenges like this every day and have built a candidate engagement platform that can be plugged into your necessary technology platforms with ease.
